In a Pinch? Repair Your Pallets!

We all know that pallets have been hard to come by this year. If you’re feeling the pinch, consider repairing and reusing your existing supply.

In a Pinch? Repair Your Pallets!

Production shutdowns, labor shortages, and the rising cost for nails and other fasteners have made it difficult to source new and used pallets. Those that are available are not cheap.

Therefore, if you have any used pallets lying around, get them to a pallet recycler who can repair them for re-use. It will save you a lot of money and headache!

6 Things to Know About Recycled Pallets:

  1. The most recycled pallet, and therefore the highest in demand, is the GMA or 48×40 pallet. While other sizes are also recycled, odd- or custom-sized pallets may be better suited for specialty uses.
  2. Like new pallets, the recycled variety are graded according to cosmetic characteristics. Grade A (or #1) pallets look as close to new as possible with fewer blemishes such as discoloration or protruding nail heads. Grade B (or #2) pallets have minor defects such as stained or dirty wood. Either option, however, may have variable deck board widths.
  3. Recycled pallet material tends to be drier than new wood, which helps strengthen the pallet making it almost as durable as a new pallet.
  4. Used pallets that have been repaired are ideal for one-way shipping. But they can be suitable for numerous shipments if a combination of material is used during remanufacturing. We recommend new material for the critical load dimensions and recycled material for the surrounding area.
  5. Recycled pallets can be shipped internationally once they have undergone heat treatment.
  6. To help facilitate the recycling process, several online resources will pair up those who have pallets with those who need pallets. One site is the North American Pallet Recycling Network, which directly matches generators and recyclers of pallets.
