Fire Prevention Month
One of the biggest fire hazards in the warehouse is wood pallets. If you are the manufacturer of these pallets then you know the threat that they pose. Overall warehouse safety should be considered daily to mitigate potential fire risks. This fire safety month we wish to share a few tips to ensure safety.
Fire Hazards For Pallet Manufacturers
Just this year in the city of Chicago, where we are headquartered, a pallet company went up in flames. This company, Commercial Pallet, had the unfortunate event happen and cause them to abruptly close their doors. This is a very real threat for those connected to lumber at all. The best way to avoid the large threat of fire is to have regular checks, stay properly clean and maintain quick access to a water source for firefighters. You can read our previous block entitled “Storing Pallets? Do These 8 Things to Avoid Fire Hazards“. You can also access the NWPCA’s code compliance manual. It is important to remain observant of manufacturing conditions as pallets can serve as the perfect fuel for a fire.
Fire Hazards In The Warehouse
The obvious risk to employee’s health and lives is normally the first thought, but even if everyone is unharmed if the fire is successful then their jobs could be at risk. Start by accessing any current fire risks in the facility. Next, I’d look at the placement and quantity of fire extinguishers on hand. If anything does happen, you want to assure that you and your team can respond quickly. This is why proper trainings with them should be done as well. If you have not already, then hanging signing indicating hazards and a few fire alarms should be in the warehouse. Lastly, if there are not any sprinkler systems, you should ensure they are implemented and working properly. Overall, all warehouses should read up on OSHA’s fire safety- standards to make themselves familiar with their expectations.
