What You Should Know About Winter Pallet Storage

We all know that prolonged exposure to harsh winter weather is harmful to humans and pets. But what about your pallets? Can they withstand outdoor storage in the winter? Here’s what you need to know…

Storing pallets outside during winter can be done; however, lengthy periods of exposure to winter elements can have a negative impact on the longevity and structural integrity of wooden pallets.

That said, pallets made of hardwoods–such as oak–tend to be more durable than softwood pallets and are likely to withstand outdoor storage better. In addition, pallets that have been treated or coated with protective finishes may have increased resistance to moisture, decay, and other environmental factors.

In general, however, long-term storage outside in cold weather may result in warping or decay due to moisture damage, cracking or splitting wood from repeated freezing and thawing, as well as discoloration and degradation from UV exposure. Stacks of pallets may also freeze together, making it difficult to separate them without damaging the wood.

To mitigate these issues, it’s advisable to take precautions, such as elevating pallets to prevent them from sitting in water, covering them with tarps or plastic wraps to shield them from moisture, and storing them in a dry area if possible. Regular inspection of pallets during winter is also important to identify and address any signs of damage promptly.

If time or resources are tight, Rose Pallet can perform routine inspections for you. This ensures that any signs of damage will be identified and addressed immediately. Ask us about our no-hassle winter inspection services.

Ideally, long-term storage of pallets in the wintertime should be done indoors or in a covered space. This will protect your precious pallets from harsh weather and prevent future headaches and expenses for you. We’ve still got several weeks of winter to go. Don’t let your pallets ride it out alone.
