What is a Skid?
Skids and pallets are two items frequently seen in warehouses. They are often also mistaken for each other during material handling. Material handling refers to the way items are moved and stored. The thing is though, with the few differences between the two people often assume skids and pallets are one and the same. Truth is they are not.
What is a Skid?
The skid came before the pallet it is rumored to have been back in Egyptian times. Although, they are recorded better around 1897. The pallet then came along around the 1920’s, after the forklift was invented to work better with the machinery. A skid can be made with a few differences in them but there are some basics that separate a pallet from a skid. The main difference is that a skid will have no bottom deck. Normally they are constructed of a solid top of 2-inch deck and stringers of about 7 inches high by today’s standards. Also, skids will have four feet underneath the top loading deck. A pallet will normally have three or four stringers across the length in either direction. Skids offer a considerable amount of mobility over a pallet.
Key Skid Features:
- No bottom deck gives less resistance, allowing skids to be dragged across floors easily
- Cheaper to purchase than pallets
- More mobile makes it the ideal foundation for heavy machinery
- Takes up less space when nested together
