Commitment to Recycle, Re-Use, and Buy Recycled Products
In its 24th year, America Recycles Day continues to inspire more recycling throughout the country. Of course, as providers of wood pallets, which are 100% recyclable, we are proud to raise awareness for this worthy occasion.
America Recycles Day occurs each year on November 15. It was created by the National Recycling Coalition in 1997. Two years later the president signed an official proclamation, making it a national observance. It is now recognized as a day to create awareness for and encourage Americans to recycle and buy recycled products.
Corporate Commitment
One place you can start is with your operation’s pallet procurement. Approximately 20% of pallets not in use are discarded in a landfill. Reusing pallets is a great way to prevent this waste and save a little money. However, if your pallets are damaged after use, rather than throw them away, it may be possible to repair or remanufacture the pallet. Worn pallets may also be given away or sold at a discount for upcycling, which is the process by which the material is repurposed and transformed into a new item.
Personal Commitment
Aside from your warehouse and distribution operations, you can do your part to recycle and reduce waste in your home or neighborhood. At the America Recycles Day Web site, you can determine when, where, and how to recycle in your community; take a pledge to learn about recyclable materials, actively reduce your waste output, and encourage others to recycle; and attend or organize a recycling event.
You can also do your part to recycle at work. Here are some easy ideas:
- Keep reusable utensils at your desk
- Bring your own coffee mug. Most disposable coffee cups are lined with plastic and cannot be recycled or composted. (You may also get a small discount if you bring your own cup to certain coffee shops.)
- Properly wash and sort your recyclables before placing them in the recycling bin at work
- Pack a lunch in a reusable container to save money and the environment. Or, when visiting your favorite takeout place, bring your own bag and remind coworkers to do the same.
