Making the switch to recycled pallets in 2022

There’s no doubt that recycled pallets are a viable alternative.  In fact, recycled pallets have similar strength and performance to new pallets. Like the new variety, recycled pallets can be used for international shipping. And because they are made from recycled wood with less moisture, they can be lighter in weight which translates to lower freight costs. Of course, you can’t overlook the obvious benefit that buying recycled pallets conserves resources and keeps unnecessary waste out of landfills too.

But are they available?

The fact of the matter is that pallet cores are hard to come by. When the price of spruce-pine-fir (SPF) rose to an unprecedented price last year, many companies made the switch to recycled pallets. This led to a shortage of pallet cores for repair. On top of that, retailers and DCs continue to hang onto their existing pallets and re-use them rather than recycling them.

So, unfortunately, it’s not that easy to switch over right now. As an alternative, as your provider about combo pallets as many recyclers are producing these instead. Combo pallets are remanufactured or completely rebuilt using a combination of old and new materials. They can be customized to any specifications or size required.
