Why Pallet Specs Matter

Do you know your pallet specs? It seems like a basic question, but many buyers are stumped. And there is a common misconception that it doesn’t really matter—pallets aren’t complicated so any variety should work, right? Don’t be fooled…

Specification Matters

With supply tight and demand high, many buyers are happy just to get their hands on pallets. Yet, buyer beware—as the price of material increases, pallet design can suffer. For example, some manufacturers are using less wood to reduce cost. That’s why it critical to know your specification to avoid buying a substandard pallet. Any variation in the thickness of deck boards to the type of fastener used can make a big difference—especially if your warehouse is relying heavily on automation. A pallet that doesn’t meet exact specifications can cause equipment to jam or result in product damage. Either scenario is costly in downtime, delays, or inventory loss.

A Closer Look

Fortunately, it’s never too late to review and perhaps revise specifications. It’s likely your needs have changed over the past few years as well, which also warrants a fresh look at what pallets you have, and which type you truly need.

Rose Pallet can evaluate your supply and help you determine the ideal pallet for your operations. We’ll look at how pallets interact with your equipment and shipping cycle as well as long-term initiatives like sustainability. All of these factors can impact the size, construction, and material specified.

If you do have an existing spec, but have changed suppliers or are diversifying, verify that the spec you have on file is what you are receiving. Be aware that programs with new suppliers can be designed off old samples rather than current specs.

Ultimately, pallet specification is a critical issue affecting quality control and your bottom line. While there are many alternative and viable options in pallet design, it’s important to ensure your pallet specifications align with your needs.
