Ordering Pallets? Do This First!

While pallets may look similar, not all are created equal. The same is true for pallet providers. Who you buy from is just as important as the pallet itself. Consider these four questions before your next order.

What do I need? Digital technology has made a big impact on the pallet industry. Warehouse management software enables tracking of products and pallets. Design software can build the perfect pallet for your shipments. Digital networks connect suppliers and buyers to move pallets where they’re needed. Find out from your pallet provider what technology solutions they offer and make sure it aligns with your goals. Ultimately, you don’t want to pay for something you don’t need, and technology isn’t cheap.

How much do I want to pay? Large pallet companies have large operations with mills, manufacturing plants, warehouses, distribution centers, equipment, trucks, pallets, and many employees. But that overhead is costly and may result in higher prices for customers. Smaller providers often work with vendors or affiliates. Subsequently, their overhead is much lower. These savings may be passed on to customers.

Am I getting the best value? No one wants to pay more. But opting for the lowest-priced pallet can be costly. A cheaply made pallet can break and damage freight or jam expensive equipment. To ensure you’re getting the right pallet at a fair price, you need to keep an eye on the lumber market or partner with a pallet provider that will keep you informed. Insist on honest conversations about pricing with your provider to get the best value.

Am I getting the care I deserve?  Waiting for a call back or waiting for a delivery of pallets is nerve-racking. Your provider should be easy to access and highly responsive. Furthermore, your point-of-contact should demonstrate that he or she values you and your business. Before you buy from a company, tour their facility to discover how they handle customer service, quality assurance, and billing. And be sure to ask for references and follow-up with those given.
