As wood packaging professionals, it’s no secret that we love packages and figuring out ways to help our clients ship theirs in the most efficient and effective manner. That’s why this Friday, May 17th, holds special interest for us. Why, you may ask? Because it’s ‘Pack Rat Day!’ Yep—such a day exists. You probably know a pack rat or two (or perhaps you hold the distinction yourself). And, no, warehouse managers don’t count—that pile of packages is part of his or her job!

Let’s be honest, most of us have been a pack rat at one time or another. So, continue reading to learn a little more about this fun day and then don’t forget to celebrate it on Friday.

While the origin or creator of this day is unknown, we think the world’s largest e-commerce marketplace (a.k.a. Amazon) might have something to do with it. Regardless, this day is always celebrated every 17th of May. To properly enjoy Pack Rat Day, follow a few simple (and fun) rules:

  1. Pack Rat Day on May 17Refrain from cleaning your home or workspace today (to celebrate Pack Rat Day, you have to be one or at least look like it).
  2. Don’t discard anything today…most especially your pallets. In fact, we encourage you to keep all your pallet scraps or wood waste; we’ll happily collect it. Learn more.
  3. Keep an eye out for useful stuff that is discarded by others. Did you know that pallets are the perfect material for upcycling projects? Read more about where to find discarded pallets for free and a variety of pallet upcycling ideas.
  4. Do take inventory of your things and be thankful for what you have. (Tip: This is good practice at work, too. If you’re in charge of pallet management, Rose Pallet can assess your supply.)

In all seriousness, traits of ‘pack rats’ such as saving and storing can help the bottom line at work. In the supply chain, for example, you can keep expenses down by saving or re-using pallets. And, since floor space is precious in any warehouse, adopting meticulous storage practices is key. When not in use wood pallets, for example, are stackable.

Happy Pack Rat Day from all of us at Rose Pallet. We hope you can take a little time this Friday to enjoy the fruits of your labor…and maybe open another package or two. When you’re ready to ship a few, call the packaging pros at Rose Pallet.
