National Forest Products Week
Since the 1960s national forest products week was declared, celebrated and acknowledged by the sitting presidents. This is important because it highlights the industries and the importance of conserving our forests environmental integrity. The forest products industry is responsible for employing 950,000 people in the U.S. The week is always held on the third week of October and the forest products community represents around 4% of America’s GDP.
Healthy Forests
A healthy forest is made up of rich plant and wildlife. Sometimes this can be dependent on a healthy forest products economy. As we are the ones who are disrupting the natural flow of their environment. The removal of trees to create wood products disrupts the ecosystem. It is our responsibility to add back these trees into the environment. This is being done at a rate of two trees added per every one removal. The products themselves should also be renewable and recyclable. This means their disposal should be documented so an understanding of the carbon footprint can be accounted for. When it comes to actively managing these initiatives it is largely the responsibility of State forestry agencies.
Forest Products
Forest products must remain safe when they are in use. This is due to the way that pests can travel on the items. The integrity of the wood is important during transport due to the porous nature of lumber. This is especially true for international transport. There are things such as the Asian beetle which can be an invasive species in America. There are a multitude of products that come from our forests.
- Lumber
- Paper
- Packaging including cardboard
- Tissue products
- Wood Pallets & Crates
Thirty percent of the world is covered in forests, making it very important for the ecosystem. As concerns rise about global warming and deforestation, we want to continue to spread insight on the situations amongst us. Let’s celebrate not only our forests but those involved in any forest products industry. Let us continue to protect the environment by working together.
