National Food Safety Education Month

September is national food safety education month. According to medical professionals, there are more than 250 food-borne diseases, all of which can be traced back to three categories of hazards: biological, chemical, and physical. Wood Pallets are a large contributor of health conditions in the food manufacturing process. If not careful these pallets can possibly contain a physical threat to the food. This is one reason having clean pallets is of extreme importance for manufacturers of consumable and sensitive products.

How National Food Safety Education Month Began

National Food Safety Month was created by the National Restaurant Association in 1994. The purpose of this national holiday is to help reduce food borne illnesses. The Federal government estimates that there are about 48 million cases of food borne illness annually – that’s about 1 in 6 Americans each year. There are many partners who contribute to our food reaching our tables who all have an impact on quality. The farmers are normally the first to mind, but shippers, manufacturers etc. all play an important part. Before the Industrial Revolution it was up to the states to make their own food safety laws, but that soon became a federal responsibility to maintain uniformity nation-wide.

How Pallets Play A Part In Food Safety

Most of the pallets used in today’s market are wood pallets. This is important because wood is porous and can easily soak up contaminates. This is why sourcing quality pallets and having proper prevention methods is crucial. The best way to ensure the integrity of the wood is to purchase ones that have had a heat treatment to kill any insects and larvae found on the wood.  Also, storing the pallets in a dry, well-ventilated area will help stop the growth and spread of mold. We offer mold guard as well which will also help stop mold from contaminating any consumables.
