From time to time, we like to share interesting and educational industry articles with our loyal blog readers.  And, being as another year is coming to an end, we decided it is the appropriate time to look forward.

In keeping with that theme, we came across an article that discusses the future of pallet usage. We’ve briefly summarized its talking points below, but we encourage you to read the full-length version, which is linked at the end of this post.

In the United States and other developed countries, nearly one-sixth of greenhouse gases are generated from transporting commercial freight. This statistic has prompted some scholars and environmentalists to research and report on alternative means to optimize global logistics in order to reduce carbon footprint and material waste. From local growing facilities in urban centers to meat produced in laboratories, the idea is to reduce the need to move product great distances and free up land formerly used for agriculture. But, what would that mean for pallets?

In an article written by Rick LeBlanc entitled “The Future of Palletization,” the author examines the current trends already taking place in the economy impacting palletization along with the potential for significant challenges in the future. Fortunately for pallets, however, LeBlanc surmises that, as local production of food increases, along with more urban-based distribution centers for other products, pallets will still be needed. We certainly hope so! Although, the best thing we can all do is stay abreast of the trends and be ready to adapt as necessary.
