What Is a Pallet Deck Board, and Why Does It Matter?

When most people think of a pallet, they picture a flat wooden platform that moves goods from here to there. But every pallet is made up of key components—and one of the most important is the deck board.

What Is a Pallet Deck Board, and Why Does It Matter?

Whether you’re shipping products, storing consumer goods, or managing warehouse logistics, understanding the role of deck boards can help you choose the right pallet for your operation and avoid costly damage or inefficiencies.

What is a pallet deck board?

A deck board is one of the flat, horizontal boards that form the top and/or bottom surface of a pallet. They’re typically nailed across the stringers or blocks and support the product being stored or transported.

Simply put, top deck boards bear the weight of the load and bottom deck boards stabilize the pallet and support stacking or racking.

Deck boards vary in thickness, width, spacing, and placement—and those differences matter more than you might think.

Why deck boards matter

  • Load Distribution – More or thicker deck boards equate to better weight distribution making them critical for heavy, uneven, or fragile loads.
  • Forklift Safety – Properly spaced deck boards can prevent product sagging or even falling during forklift entry.
  • Product Protection – Tighter deck board spacing can prevent small-box items or product corners from slipping between gaps.
  • Automation Compatibility – Deck board specs may affect whether a pallet runs smoothly through conveyor lines or robotic systems.

Common deck board variations

  • Standard spacing: Around 3.5–4 inches between boards.
  • Full coverage (close-boarded): Little to no spacing, often used for smaller product loads or in export.
  • Wide gaps: Useful when airflow is needed (produce, drying), but may limit stackability or product types.

What to consider when designing a pallet

  1. What kind of product are you loading?
  2. Will the pallet be racked, stacked, or both?
  3. Are forklifts or pallet jacks involved?
  4. Do you need custom board spacing or reinforcements?
