Converting a pallet that has reached the end of its lifecycle into a new item, often with more value than its original purpose, is known as “pallet upcycling.”  This process started gaining popularity in the last decade and has now become an obsession among many DIY enthusiasts.  Some controversy has entered the scene, however, over upcycling pallets for indoor uses.  The reason for concern is that many pallets have been treated at some point in their lifecycle with chemicals or heat to make them suitable for shipping overseas (and less susceptible to bug infestation or mold/rot).

A stamp on the pallet indicates if that pallet has been treated using heat (HT) or chemicals (MB).  The problem with chemically treated pallets is that the chemicals used to fumigate may linger within the wood long after treatment, making pallets that bear the MB mark less than ideal for indoor uses.  While scrubbing or otherwise cleaning the wood prior to upcycling can help remove residual chemicals or critters, the process is not foolproof.
