Don’t Be Tricked by Pallet Myths
Carving jack-o-lanterns, donning costumes, and trick-or-treating all have roots in ancient superstition. In the spirit of the season, superstition can be undeniably fun. But we need to be careful believing in something not based on knowledge.
There are several myths or superstitions about pallets and wood packaging that can lead to misunderstandings about their use and impact. Don’t be tricked.
Myth #1: Pallets are a one-time-use product.
Reality: Many pallets are designed for multiple uses. They can be repaired and refurbished, extending their lifespan. Some companies even offer pallet pooling and rental services to reduce waste.
Myth #2: All wooden pallets are treated with harmful chemicals.
Reality: While some wooden pallets are treated with chemicals for pest control or to meet international shipping regulations (such as ISPM 15), not all wooden pallets are fumigated. Heat-treated (HT) pallets are a common alternative to chemically treated pallets.
Myth #3: Wooden pallets are bad for the environment.
Reality: Wooden pallets are often made from sustainably sourced lumber and are recyclable and repairable. They have a lower carbon footprint compared to some alternative pallet materials like plastic.
Myth #4: Plastic pallets are always more durable than wooden pallets.
Reality: The durability of pallets depends on their design, intended use, and load capacity. While plastic pallets may have advantages in certain applications, wooden pallets are often more than sufficient for many industries and can be repaired if damaged.
Myth #5: Pallets are easy to dispose of.
Reality: Disposing of pallets can be challenging. Many pallet recycling and repurposing programs exist to help reduce the environmental impact of pallet disposal.
Myth #7: Pallets don’t affect supply chain efficiency.
Reality: Proper pallet selection and management can significantly impact supply chain efficiency, affecting factors like transportation costs, warehouse space utilization, and product safety.
