A recent 2018 survey of Modern Materials Handling subscribers revealed that pallet users are looking for more services. From on-site recycling and pallet inventory management to data reporting, there is significant value in partnering with a full-service provider. At Rose Pallet, we strive to offer a variety of solutions beyond providing pallets. For example, we offer pallet management programs, costing tools, and pallet treatment.

Perhaps most important, however, is our pallet design service. That’s because one pallet size and type does not fit all. It’s critical to design the right one to ensure you are getting the most bang for your buck—both from a cost and performance aspect.

In a recent article published by Pallet Enterprise, Mark White explains how to improve pallet performance and reduce cost through smarter design choices.  We’ve highlighted a few that we review and recommend most often to our clients.

Design tips for low cost and high performance:

  1. Understand how pallets must function in your operation. Know the load carrying capacity. From there, you can look at ways to improve the stiffness (or how much pallet parts bend under load) without adding cost.
  2. Determine if notches are necessary. If you can design a two-way pallet (without notches), this will save money and increase the strength and durability of the pallet.
  3. In block style pallets, the center stringer or stringer board supports most of the weight in storage racks; therefore, specify wider center stringers to improve strength spanning the length of the pallet.
  4. Use denser wood in the end boards, since that area experiences the most wear and tear from forklifts.
  5. Fasteners and threads do not cost much; therefore, be sure and select a high quality variety of each. For added durability, use more fasteners in the end boards for a stronger connection between boards.
  6. Document your design in a written specification so you have it for future reference.
