Sixty-eight years ago, the nonprofit organization Mental Health America declared May as Mental Health Month to raise awareness about mental health conditions and the importance of good mental health for everyone.

There are many different conditions that are recognized as mental illnesses. The more common types include depression, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and diseases such as dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Chances are you may know someone with one or more of the conditions listed above. It’s more likely, however, that everyone reading this post has experienced times of difficulty and stress, which are also circumstances that impact mental health. And, when your mental state is compromised, your home and work life suffers. That is why, at Rose Pallet, we believe it is important to promote mental health and well-being for all of our employees.

In support of Mental Health Month, we’ve compiled some tips, courtesy of Mental Health America (www.mentalhealthamerica.net) to help you mind your health this month:

  1. Experiment with a new recipe, write a poem, paint, or try a Pinterest project such as one of the pallet upcycling ideas we profiled in our post on May 3rd. Creative expression and overall well-being are linked.
  1. This is one of our favorite tips—boost brainpower by treating yourself to a couple pieces of dark chocolate every few days. The flavanoids, caffeine, and theobromine in chocolate are thought to work together to improve alertness and mental skills.
  1. Take time to laugh. Hang out with a funny friend, watch a comedy, or check out goofy videos online. Laughter helps reduce anxiety.
  1. Think of something in your life you want to improve, and figure out what you can do to take a step in the right direction.
  1. Leave your smart phone at home and disconnect from constant emails, alerts, and other interruptions. If this is not possible during the work week, try this on the weekends or holidays instead.
  1. Send a thank you note–not for a material item, but to let someone know why you appreciate them. Written expressions of gratitude are linked to increased happiness. (This is one of our favorite ways to correspond with customers!)
  1. Take 30 minutes over your lunch to go for a walk outside. Research shows that being in nature can increase energy levels, reduce depression, and boost well-being.
  1. Practice forgiveness; even if it’s just forgiving that person who cut you off during your commute. People who forgive have better mental health and report being more satisfied with their lives.
